BIGTIME FUNCTIONAL DEVELOPMENT

If you ask any strength coach what the most important part of the body to train is, they may all give a different answer or they may say it depends on the sport. But if you ask them what the top 3 areas to train are, they will all have the core in the top 3.
Functional training is the type of training that takes into consideration the sport, type of movement, and the muscle groups that are involved in those motions. Functional training targets primarily the core of the body; the area that every sports related activity revolves around. Without core strength an athlete is limited to how strong, powerful and functional he or she is.
Functional training is limited only by the athlete’s willingness to do the exercises. Balance, ab work, medicine ball training, fit ball training, flexibility, and sport specific exercises are all part of the functional exercise regiment. BigTime functional training can be categorized in 4 primary areas:
- Flexibility and dynamic warm-up
- Balance
- Abdomimal specific exercises
- Sport Specific exercises
BigTime Athletic Development programs consist of at least 30 percent of the program being functional training -most of our programs are closer to 50 percent. Every program consists of med ball exercises, balance exercises, sport specific exercises and flexibility exercises.
The type of functional exercises that our athletes complete depends on the sport, level of competency, and age of the athlete. An athlete has to be built from the inside out to be able to perform at the highest level. You can’t expect an athlete to perform any activity with any success without a proper base for the extremities to work off of. A weak core and poor functional training leads to poor performance, break down and possible injury. A strong core leads to championships!
Flexibility is used as tool to improve performance as well as prevent injury. BigTime requires every athlete to go through an active dynamic moving type of flexibility routine. Recent research has shown that a dynamic moving type of warm up and flexibility routine is more effective than the conventional methods. Warming up every muscle and combining that with flexibility exercises gives each athlete a way to prepare for the activities following and also improves range of motion which will improve performance.
Every BigTime Athletic Development program that an athlete completes is going to give them the best chance to not only succeed but to excel. BigTime functional training is one of the areas that seperates our programs from ordinary programs.
Being average means that you are as close to bottom as you are to the top… we like being at the top
